Your driveway is exposed to pressure and the elements every day — it works hard. Over time, the weight of your vehicles, rain, snow, erosion, and oil leaks can degrade the surface. Cracks and potholes can make your driveway look tired fast, and they're likely killing your curb appeal.
But should you fully replace the driveway, or just get it repaired?
- Age: if your driveway is asphalt and over 20 years old, it's time to replace it. Concrete over 25 years old should also be replaced.
- Drainage issues: often no big deal, and can simply be repaired.
- Cracks: generally, if the crack is less than a quarter-inch wide, you can get it repaired. Bigger than that, you'd be smart to get it replaced — repairing a large crack is just a band-aid and won't fix the underlying issue. Water will get in and the crack will come back.
